Iqra: The First Verses Revealed
Surah Al-Alaq · Verses 1-5 (96:1-5)
Also known as Iqra bismi rabbik · Read in the name of your Lord · Al-Alaq 1-5
The first five verses of Surah Al-Alaq are the first revelation of the Quran, brought to the Prophet in the cave of Hira. They begin with “Recite in the name of your Lord who created” and honor reading, teaching and the pen.
- 96:1
ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ
Iqra bismi rab bikal lazee khalaq
Recite in the name of your Lord who created -
- 96:2
خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ
Khalaqal insaana min 'alaq
Created man from a clinging substance.
- 96:3
ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ
Iqra wa rab bukal akram
Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -
- 96:4
ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ
Al lazee 'allama bil qalam
Who taught by the pen -
- 96:5
عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ
'Al lamal insaana ma lam y'alam
Taught man that which he knew not.
